Story: Pamela, a woman in late-1800s England, wishes to be her own person and has no intention to ever marry. After she has a great deal of difficulty finding a job, she finally lands a position at a "womans" magazine that covers topics like sewing and cooking. When the editor takes sick, Pamela moves the magazine into discussing issues like gender equality, child labor, medical care, and job searches. She is then surprised to find herself the leader of a movement. In Victorian England, Pamela Thistlewaite bucks societal notions of what a young woman "should" be and want, much to the exasperation of her strict father, Judge Byron Thistlewaite. The Judge believes, as do most in his generation in this society, that females are inferior to males and should learn to do only things that will serve the men in their lives. Pamela, a feminist, vows to herself that should she ever become a parent, she would be nothing like her father and she would be open and honest with her children. The Judge decides to marry off both his daughters to men of whom he approves. He approves the choice of his other, more subservient daughter Flora Anne, who feels torn between following her fathers word or her sisters example, and wants Flora Anne to marry Lieutenant Alan Freeland immediately, if only to accommodate his military service. Meanwhile, Pamela secretly starts to see a young man named Lord Gerald Gaythorne; they fall in love, but out of circumstances having nothing to do with the Judge, a marriage between them will not happen. For various reasons, including having someone to commiserate with and because Flora Anne is pregnant, Pamela decides to take an extended vacation to Italy, where the Freelands now live. By the end of Pamelas nearly-year-long stay in Italy, she obliges Flora Annes request that she take her daughter, also named Flora, back to England and raise her there. Unmarried with a child to care for, Pamela decides not to move back into her fathers home but to live independently in London. Finding work is difficult as most employers are unwilling to hire a woman, but she manages to negotiate a job working at a small womens weekly magazine, the type of publication which advanced the stereotype of the subservient woman she so abhors. Based on the plight of a young woman who visits the magazine office, Pamela seizes on an opportunity to transform the magazine into one that advances her feminist views. During this time, she falls in love with British diplomat Thomas Lane, a friend of her brother-in-law; he wants to marry Pamela, but she will not, only because she is keeping a secret related to Flora. The situation gets more complex when Pamela becomes reacquainted with Lord Gaythorne.
