Chicagoan Nick Conover received a suspended sentence for being caught joyriding in a stolen car, with his drivers license suspended indefinitely. Nickys problems are seen as running around with the wrong crowd. Nickys sentence is predicated on him living at the run down Kentucky horse farm of his Aunt Henrietta and Uncle Jed Bruce, who he hasnt seen since he was a child. The judge figured this more wholesome environment would get Nicky away from his bad influences. Henrietta wants to be a part of Nickys salvation, but Jed doesnt trust the fact of a delinquent being under his roof, although he has other more personal reasons not having to do with Nicky for his initially antagonistic relationship with his nephew. Nicky doesnt rebel against farm life, but ends up gravitating toward anything mechanical, especially the sports car owned by sophisticated Fran Templeton - the elder daughter of Dan Templeton, who owns the luxurious neighboring horse farm - and by association Fran herself. With his infatuation with Fran, Nicky doesnt see that Frans younger sister, the tomboyish and horse loving Liz Templeton, hangs around him because she is falling for him. It isnt until a couple of incidents involving Jeds only remaining horse, the spirited Tugfire, occur that Nicky begins to see his uncle and Liz in a different light. But Nickys past catching up with him may get in the way of a Nicky/Liz happy ending.
Young Nick Conover is forced to leave Chicago after being put on probation for stealing a car. From now on, he will have to live and work on the Kentucky farm of his uncle Jed Bruce and his aunt Henrietta. In other words, there he is, forlorn, in the middle of nowhere. All the more as his uncle, who does not seem to have overcome the death of his son Jed Jr., does not welcome him with open arms. It goes without saying that Nick, who is not such a bad boy after all, is very upset. But luckily, there is also kind-hearted aunt Henrietta, a wonderful trotter who has gone wild and who is just asking to be tamed as well as two charming young neighbors, Fran and Liz. All in all, happiness might well be a thing called Kentucky...!
