1963. Living in small town Canada, shy teenager Stepphy Holliday dreams becomes a pop singer, rather than her drab life looking after her alcoholic father George and working at his service station since he cant in his alcoholic state. Despite her wallflower status, there are two young men who vie for her affections, one being classmate Bennett, and another being young adult Fabian who works as a project manager at the Purple Mist factory. With Bennetts help, Stepphy believes the best way to achieve that stardom is to enter the American Ingenue Talent Competition. Making it into the first round on the strength of her audition tape, Stepphy, against Georges wishes in not wanting her to abandon him, has to try and make her way to New York for the competition. Stepphy has a change of heart when her idol, singing movie star Bobby Shore, and his manager Helmut get stranded in town with a broken down car. She then devotes her energies both to get Bobby to fall in love with her and be her entrance into show business. What happens between Bobby and Stepphy is affected by a chemical leak at Purple Mist which has some unfortunate consequences to the townsfolk.
