Abbey (Lenz) is a career-focused executive from Boston who decides in a moment of impulsiveness, to pour her feelings out and admit her desire to find love, in an anonymous letter she seals in a bottle and tosses into Boston Harbor. Months later, the bottle washes ashore in Maine and is discovered by Nick (Walker), son of the CEO of Everett Valley Farms - the company where Abbey works and is about to secure the biggest deal of her career. When Nick is called home to help with his fathers company, he decides to contact the mystery woman with the only information he has - an email. Without knowing each others identity, Abbey and Nick begin an online relationship which becomes a budding romance, while at the same time, they are being forced to work together on a project where they are not getting along.
Thirty-six year old Abbey Lawrence is rising in her professional life, she an acquisitions analyst with Boston-based Everson Valley Farms, which started out solely as a farming business owned/operated by the Eversons, but which has morphed into a conglomerate in all aspects of the food business. Abbeys job is even more important in the lead-up to the company going public. But her love life is in shambles, her latest boyfriend, like all the ones before him, breaking up with her in accusing her of being emotionally closed and controlled. In light of the latest break-up, her Aunt Frances is barely able to convince her to write down all her emotions about herself and what and who she wants in life, place the note in a sealed bottle, and throw it into Boston Harbor to open up herself if only for herself. Back at work, Abbey, with company president Earl Everson mandated to cut back on work hours for his own health, and his daughter, company executive Sophie Everson, busy planning her upcoming wedding, is given the assignment to handle all aspects of acquisitions leading up to the public offering. Earl and Sophie are able to convince his son/her brother, Nick Everson, to return temporarily to the company to be Abbeys partner if only to give that Everson clout in whatever meetings are held. Although knowing the company inside and out, Nick left it years ago in not enjoying the business aspect, but rather enjoying the farming side - he who has since traveled the world moving from one job in the great outdoors to another - he leaving the business which has placed a strain between himself and his father. Earl and Sophie are hoping this temporary assignment will lead to Nick returning to the company and Boston permanently. Abbey and Nick butt heads professionally in their different work priorities, Abbey who is all about what is on the prospectus while Nick is all about the experience and spontaneity. What neither knows is that they have started an online correspondence in he finding her bottled letter, their online selves who are starting to fall for each other. The question then becomes if they will be able to mesh in all aspects of their lives when they discover it is the other who is his/her online love.
