English literature teacher Maggie Webber accidentally sees her husband, lawyer Tom Webber, kiss Brigitte. When she confronts him, he says to love another, after 25 years of happy marriage, with a daughter in college, Diane. After Maggie learns from a friend Toms numerous adventures were widely known, she returns for the summer holiday to Little Bear Lake, where she had her best summer at 18, and met, working as dance hall waitress, her first love, Patrick Fleming, a handsome romantic whom she left to return to her sick, widowed father. After learning Patrick married the next year and died years ago, Maggie decides to take sabbatical year and a bank loan to buy and reopen the Lakes old dance hall, The Harvest Moon, to great local acclaim. At the mooring dock, which Patrick built in their days, she meets his handsome young adult son, John Keats Fleming (middle name after her favorite poet), who is engaged to Amy and a woodcarver, so he works as foreman at the Moons restoration. At first Maggie keeps an uncomfortable distance from kind, efficient, helpful John because he reminds her too much of his dad, but they naturally grow closer. After John refuses to move to Chicago with Amy and the Moons successful reopening, things can change, but the past still weighs heavily...
Despite believing he was her soul mate, college English Literature professor Maggie Wheeler née Patterson divorces her husband of twenty-five years, lawyer Tom Webber, after she catches him having an affair, he admitting that he is in love with his mistress, a paralegal named Brigitte. Still feeling lost a few months after the revelation, Maggie decides to take a sabbatical to get away to re-energize herself, she choosing Little Bear Lake, Minnesota where she spent a summer working at a dance hall called the Harvest Moon when she was eighteen in the late 1960s. It was there where she had her first but not consummated love with a local boy named Patrick Flemming. This decision is after she rereads some love letters and other mementos she kept from Patrick from that year. However, those letters all of sudden stopped when she wrote to him telling him that she would not be returning the following summer if only because of she needing to look after her ailing and recently widowed father. As such, Maggie, who never returned, has no idea what ever happened to Patrick. She hopes to rekindle the feeling of that summer on this trip, but doesnt want to admit that she wants that feeling with Patrick. Upon her arrival, she finds that the Harvest Moon is now boarded up, run down and closed, but she does reconnect with a few people from the era, including the Harvest Moons owner/operators, Gil and Harriet Finnigan, and their daughter, Claire, who has just returned to town following her third divorce. Maggie learns from Claire that Patrick has since died. Thus, to rekindle that feeling, Maggie wants to refurbish the Harvest Moon to its former glory despite the financial difficulties in doing so, and wants to open in eight weeks on the day of the actual harvest moon. Who she hires to be the foreman for the renovation is who she learned is Patricks son, John Flemming. During the process of renovations, Maggie finds it increasingly difficult to spend time with John as everything about him reminds her of Patrick. John starts to fall for Maggie not knowing about her romance with his father, and despite the differences in their ages and he already being in a long term relationship with a local woman named Amy. In turn, Maggie has to figure out if she is falling for John or falling for a surrogate of Patrick, and decide whether she will allow herself to do anything romantically with John regardless of the reason and with the knowledge that he knows nothing about her and his father.
