Widowed veteran William Smith runs an English country gas station with his doted and devoted son, Danny. Their property is the last hole in filthy rich Victor Hazells plan, allegedly a pheasant hunting estate. William abhors Victors hobby as much as him. He sends every inspection he can find, but none resist William and Dannys disarming charm. At the laid-back village school, Danny becomes new teacher Captain Lancasters chosen whipping boy, but proves to be as hard a nut to crack as William.
