Murder. Marlowe. Mitchum. No one is a saint in the City of Angels. The immortal stars as s legendary detective Philip Marlowe in the neo-noir mystery Farewell, My Lovely. The hard-boiled Marlowes latest cases (one, a search for an ex-convicts lost love, and the other, the murder of a client) take on an even more sinister turn when they begin to connect, leading the private eye deeper and deeper into the seamy underbelly of 1940s Los Angeles. As the stakes are raised and the body count swells, it looks like Marlowe might be next on the list to take the big sleep. Also featuring , , , and in an early role, Farewell, My Lovely is an unflinching take on Chandlers pulpy novel and a mystery film as powerful and complex as its leading man.
This, the second adaptation of Raymond Chandlers novel, is much closer to the source text than the original - , which tended to avoid some of the sleazier parts of the plot - but still concerns private eye Philip Marlowes attempts to locate Velma, a former dancer at a seedy nightclub and the girlfriend of Moose Malloy, a petty criminal just out of prison. Marlowe finds that once he has taken the case, events conspire to put him in dangerous situations, and he is forced to follow a confusing trail of untruths and double-crosses before he is able to locate Velma.
