Hip young New York couple Jennifer and Paul Montgomery love to play games. Wealthy heiress Jennifer inherited their New York brownstone from her mother. Paul likes to spend her money indulging in his interest of modern art. They hold frequent parties and play their games. Into their lives comes door-to-door sales-rep Lisa Schindler. They decide to play one of their practical jokes on grocery-deliveryman Norman: a supposedly-jealous Paul accuses him of making advances to Jennifer. He He shoots him twice--with blanks--and everyone has a laugh, but the third shot kills him. In the days following his death, Jennifer begins to hear noises in the house and seeing shadowy figures at the end of dark hallways. Is it all a game?
Young, married Manhattanites Paul and Jennifer Montgomery, too wealthy with too much time on their hands, indulge themselves with their adult toys--primarily contemporary art and a wide variety of arcade-type games and novelties--and with a flair for the dramatic, show them off to their wealthy society friends. Generally, Paul is the one with the buying impulses, while Jennifer, who brought the money into their marriage from an inheritance, proverbially writes the checks. One day, middle-aged Lisa Schindler is able to maneuver herself into the Montgomerys house on a lie; shortly afterward, Jennifer discovers that she is only a door-to-door cosmetics salesperson, and Lisa collapses ill on their living room floor from what Jennifers longtime family doctor determines is a case of sheer exhaustion. Lisa has nowhere else to go, so Jennifer invites her to stay with them overnight until she is well enough. In getting to know Paul and Jennifer and giving them gifts which fit directly into their kitsch mentality, Lisa, who also indulges in the occult stemming from her old-world European background, implies that Pauls collection of games is for children, she telling them of the more adult and worldly variety of games she has enjoyed in her past. This statement and a demonstration of what she means begin a series of games among the three where they need to one-up the others on the last game played, each game more and more dangerous with potentially deadly consequences.
