In Gegen die Wand Cahit, a 40-something male from Mersin in Turkey has removed everything Turkish from his life. He has become an alcoholic drug addict and at the start of the movie wants to end it all. Sibel a 20-something female from Hamburg wishes to please her Turkish parents yet yearns for freedom. She has had her nose broken by her brother for being seen holding hands with a boy and yet she can not break her mothers heart and run away. She too attempts suicide and she first approaches Cahit there at the Hospital. Sibel asks Cahit to marry her, as she believes this to be the way out of her parents house. She promises Cahit that their relationship will be like roommates, not like a married couple. The film follows Sibel and Cahit as they get married, become closer and eventually fall in love.
Condemned to a life of self-pity and drug abuse, Cahit, a German-Turk in his forties who has given up from life, decides to put an end to his miserable existence, and in despair, he drives his car head-on into a wall. Instead, Cahit finds himself at a psychiatric clinic where he meets with Sibel, a suicidal young German of Turkish descent, who is also trapped in a meaningless life because of her conservative family of strict rules and laws. With the intention to finally break free and as a last resort, Sibel knowing that only a marriage could save her, she asks of Cahit to cohabit and set up a marriage of convenience, an absurd proposal which he reluctantly accepts. As Sibel enjoys her newly-acquired freedom in Hamburgs bustling nightlife, Cahit prefers to silently observe from afar indifferently, however, when the repressed mutual emotions finally erupt, what could possibly stand in the way of love?
