Story: When strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the citys residents one body at a time.

The first remake of the paranoid infiltration classic moves the setting for the invasion from a small town to the city of San Francisco and starts as Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different. When questioned later they themselves seem changed as they deny everything or make lame excuses. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted "replacement" realises that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate. But who can he trust to help him and who has already been snatched?

In San Francisco, public health inspector Matthew Bennell is intrigued when a co-worker and good friend, Elizabeth Driscoll, tells him that her husband has suddenly changed. He suggests they speak to his friend, psychiatrist David Kibner, who confirms that several of his patients are claiming that their husbands or wives are not who they seem to be. He puts it down to mass hysteria until two other of Matthews friends, Jack and Nancy Bellicec, discover a partly formed corpse. They soon discover that humans are being replaced with exact copies who are emotionless and are moving forward apparently unstoppable, in their quest to replace everyone.
