The Cairns life seems to be a harmonic family: The father Brad (Sam Rockwell) works as a stockbroker, his wife Abby (Vera Farmiga) takes care of their common new-born daughter Lily (Kolb and Vill), and the nine-year-old Joshua (Jacob Kogan) is high-talented. But the appearances are deceptive. Joshua becomes gradually jealous that his parents give the baby more attention than him. As a result, he begins to terrorize his family.
Following the birth of his sister, Joshua (Jacob Kogan), an impeccably dressed, soft-spoken, nine-year-old child prodigy, finds himself unable to cope with change. Not being the center of attention anymore, Joshuas frustration is increasingly growing; while his blissfully unsuspecting parents, Brad (Sam Rockwell) and Abby Cairn (Vera Farmiga), cherish every moment with tiny Lily (Kolb and Vill), the apple of their eye. But, the boy cries for attention; and, as mysterious coincidences and ominous signs of malice and methodical manipulation damage irreparably the already fragile balance of things, a quiet but sinister undercurrent of unease drags everyone down into its unforgiving depth. What is wrong with Joshua?
