Story: Eighteen year old Marjorie Morgenstern is a proverbial New York Jewish-American princess on the cusp of womanhood. While she has in the back of her mind that she would like to become a stage actress, she is less certain about her personal future. While she has burgeoning sexual feelings for her boyfriend Sandy Lamm, who she is expected to marry eventually in he being a nice Jewish boy, she isnt sure if she truly loves him. Marjorie wants some time away to discover in part if she should accept Sandys proposal of marriage. In doing so, she meets several wannabe suitors, who will enter, leave and reenter her life over the course of her young adulthood, the one who she believes she is truly in love with being Noel Airman, fourteen years her senior, he the social director of South Wind, a summer resort in the Catskills, when they first meet. Much like Marjories chosen life path is against the tradition envisioned by her opinionated mother, Rose Morgenstern, in Rose hoping that acting is just a phase and that Marjorie will settle into a life as housewife and mother, Noel has taken a similarly unconventional life path, bucking an envisioned professional life for one in the arts, he adored as a genius by those at South Winds as he is writing a Broadway musical. What those at South Winds do not see is Noels time away from South Winds, he who has a tendency not ever to finish what he starts, which may be in part the reason why he never sees himself getting married in his romantic relationships only lasting the short course of his time in any one given place. What may be more egregious in Roses mind about Noel as a potential husband for Marjorie is the fact that he has turned his back on his Jewish heritage. As Noel contemplates settling into a more conventional life for Marjorie, the question becomes whether what they both see as the love they have for the other can overcome these many obstacles. —Huggo

While working as a counselor at a summer camp, college-student Marjorie Morgenstern falls for 32-year-old Noel Airman, a would-be dramatist working at a nearby summer theater. Like Marjorie, he is an upper-middle-class New York Jew (born Ehrman), but has fallen away from his roots, and Marjories parents object among other things to his lack of a suitable profession, such as medicine or law. Noel himself warns Marjorie repeatedly that shes much too naive and conventional for him, but they nonetheless fall in love. As they pursue an on-again-off-again relationship, Marjorie completes her studies at Hunter College, and works to establish an acting career, while Noel first leaves the theater for a job with an advertising agency, but later completes a musical hed started writing before he and Marjorie had first met. Meanwhile, their relationship deepens (though, consistent with 50s Hollywood mores, the more full-fledged sexuality in their relationship is never explicitly communicated). They plan to marry, but after the musicals critical failure on Broadway, Noel runs away. Marjorie finally tracks him down at the summer theater where they first met--and, realizing that this is probably where he belongs, finally gives up on the relationship. Helping her to move on with her life is Wally, once Noels assistant, now a very successful Broadway playwright, and all along, Marjories unrequited lover. The movie ends with a clear implication Wally and Marjorie will finally be a couple.
