Fifteen years after stabbing a classmate to conjure an imaginary phantom known as Mercy Black, Marina Hess is coming home. Shes being released from psychiatric care to live with her sister and young nephew. But in the years since her crime, the myth of Mercy Black has gone viral inspiring internet rumors, stories, and even copycat crimes. Marina is haunted by what she has done and the phantom she imagined. Though she would rather leave the past buried, her nephew becomes increasingly obsessed with Mercy Black. To save him, Marina must face her past and uncover the truth behind Mercy Black. What she discovers is a very real and very deadly horror that will stop at nothing to claim her and her nephew.

Fifteen years ago, the girls Marina Hess and her friend Rebecca Cline assault and severe a finger of their friend Lily Bellows nearby a river to summon the supernatural entity Mercy Black to help them. On the present days, Marina is considered healed from her schizophrenia and discharged by Dr. Etta Ward from the mental institution where she was interned. Her divorced sister Alice Hess welcomes Marina at home and she meets her nephew Bryce Hess and Alices boyfriend Will Nylund, who is a fan of notorious murders, and unsuccessfully presses Marina to disclose her case. Soon Marina is haunted, and sees and overhears strange things at home, and she is not sure whether they are imaginary or real.
