Arrogant TV financial advisor Lee Gates (George Clooney) and his producer Patty (Julia Roberts) are at the top of their game on CNBC, with the show Money Monster, that advises working class citizens on which stocks to buy and sell. When Gates promotes a high-tech stock that mysteriously crashes, he is held hostage on live TV by Kyle Budwell (Jack OConnell), a janitor who lost everything investing in that stock. Lee soon figures out there is more than meets the eye with the mysterious crash, and works to find out the truth.
