Story: A jaded former jockey helps a young girl prepare a wild but gifted horse for Englands Grand National Sweepstakes.

Mi Taylor (Mickey Rooney) was a young wanderer and opportunist whose father had given him "all the roads in the Kingdom" to travel. One of the roads, and a notation in his fathers journal, leads him to the quiet English countryside home of the Brown family. The youngest daughter, Velvet (Dame Elizabeth Taylor), has a passion for horses and when she wins the spirited steed Pie in a town lottery, Mi is encouraged to train the horse for the Grand National - Englands greatest racing event.

When Velvet Brown, an equine-loving 12-year-old living in rural Sussex, becomes the owner of a rambunctious horse, she decides to train it for Englands Grand National race. Aided by former jockey Mi Taylor and encouraged by her family, the determined Velvet gets her steed, affectionately called "The Pie," ready for the big day. However, a last-minute problem arises with the jockey and an unexpected rider must step in as a replacement.
