Ellen Wheeler (Dame Elizabeth Taylor), a rich woman, is recovering from a nervous breakdown with the help of her husband and a good friend. One day, while staring out the window, she witnesses a murder. But does anybody believe her?

Ellen and John Wheeler have been living in their London home for six months. They have as their current house guest Ellens best friend, Sarah Cooke, who imminently will be heading to Glasgow for a teaching job and who spends much of her time during the day with her current lover, Barry. Although she is cordial enough to him to his face, Ellen doesnt much like their neighbor, Mr. Appleby, a gardening aficionado who she learns grew up in their house. Ellen has been suffering of late from a nervous condition, including being unable to sleep, for which her doctor, Tony, has been prescribing her tranquilizers. When she does sleep, she is having recurring nightmares of the horrific automobile accident that killed her first husband, Carl, and the young woman with who he was having an affair. On one of those stormy nights she is unable to sleep, Ellen is certain she sees a dead body of a man in the closed up house across the way, the owners of the house who she and John have never met in they supposedly having left on an extended trip before Ellen and George moved in. Ellens certainty of what she saw is in the details, such as the victims throat being slashed, and he being tall and fair featured, much like Carl. In John telephoning the police, they search the house to find nothing out of the ordinary. In the next few days, others things happen that make Ellen even more certain of what she saw, with her repeated calls to the police, the investigation led by Inspector Walker, making her appear crazy in their eyes. Those calls also start to wear on John and Sarah, who want to be supportive but dont know if they can in what appears to be Ellens mental breakdown. Is Ellen going crazy or is there something else at play?
