Story: The rise and fall of Stanton Carlisle, a mentalist whose lies and deceit prove to be his downfall.

The ambitious Stanton "Stan" Carlisle (Tyrone Power) works in a sideshow as carny and assistant of the mentalist Zeena Krumbein (Joan Blondell), who is married with the alcoholic Pete (Ian Keith). The couple had developed a secret code to pretend to read minds and was successful in the show business before Pete starts drinking. Stan stays with them expecting to learn their code and leave the carnival to be a successful mentalist. Stan also flirts with the gorgeous Molly (Coleen Gray) that lives in the carnival with the strong Bruno (Mike Mazurki). Zeena and The Geek, an alcoholic man that bites the head off a live chicken that the audiences believe that is a savage, are the greatest attractions of the sideshow.

Mesmerised by the dark allure of the carnival world, self-centred and rapaciously ambitious Stanton clings to the supposed prophetess, Mademoiselle Zeena, to learn the tricks of the trade. As a catastrophic accident and pure chance favour Stanton, more and more, the unscrupulous, fake mind-reader starts using and abusing every woman who crosses paths with him, bent on greasing his path to stardom as a spiritual advisor. Now, Chicagos gullible rich swear by the Great Stantons unsurpassed psychic powers. However, when deceit, lies, and hubris pave the way to success, who can deny that theres no place to go but down?
