Desiring to start their family, young Catholic homemaker Rosemary Woodhouse and her struggling-actor husband Guy move into The Bramford: New York Citys iconic building that brims with unpleasant stories of obscure dwellers and ghastly occurrences. The young couple is soon befriended by their eccentric next-door neighbors, Roman and Minnie and Castevet; shortly afterward, Rosemary gets pregnant. However, little by little--as the inexperienced mother becomes systematically cut off from her circle of friends--alarming hints of a sinister, well-planned conspiracy start to emerge, enfolding timid Rosemary in a shroud of suspicion and mental agony. Why is everyone so conveniently eager to help? And why is Guy allowing it?
Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse move into an apartment in an opulent but gothic building in Manhattan. Their landlord, Edward "Hutch" Hutchins, attempts to dissuade them: the building has an unsavory history. They discover that their neighbors are a very friendly elderly couple, Roman and Minnie Castevet, and Guy starts spending a great deal of time with them. Soon, strange things start to happen: a young woman Rosemary meets in the laundry room seems to commit suicide, Rosemary has strange dreams and hears strange noises, and Guy becomes remote and distant. Then Rosemary gets pregnant and begins to suspect that her neighbors have special plans for her child.
