Story: Alien beings, whose settlement in a small midwestern town, are disturbed by a young professor determined to rescue his daughter from their clutches.

Charlies ex-wife disappears, and he travels to where she grew up--a rural town in the Midwest--to look for her. But, surprisingly, nobody knows about her or any of her many relatives, the Newmans. He meets aliens; but when he contacts the FBI, they dont believe him. He tells his story to a tabloid; and suddenly, he is chased by the aliens.

A spacecraft lands by a small town, and the towns population disappears. Years later, a woman leaves her daughter, off with her ex-husband, Charles Bigelow, to attend the funeral of her mother, back in her hometown of Centreville. When she doesnt return, Charles drive to Centerville to look for her, but when he arrives, he finds the towns people acting odd. After fending off an attack, he returns to New York, and finds the storys been reported; in a supermarket tabloid. After he meets the peppers editor, Betty Walker, (and after shes been attacked, the pair team up, with Charles hoping to rescue his wife from the extraterrestrial beings.
