Story: An old man and his sister are concealing a terrible secret from their adopted teen daughter, concerning a hidden abandoned farmhouse, located deep in the woods.

Pete (Edward G. Robinson) and Ellen Morgan (Dame Judith Anderson) have reared Meg (Allene Roberts) as their own, ever since she was a baby and her parents took off. Now a teen, Meg convinces her friend Nath Storm (Lon McCallister) to come help with chores on the farm: Pete isnt getting around on his wooden leg like he used to. When Nath insists on using a short cut home through the woods, Pete gets quite agitated and warns him of screams in the night, of terrors associated with the red house. Curious, Meg and Nath ignore his warnings and begin exploring. Meg begins falling in love with Nath, but his girlfriend Tibby Rinton (Julie London) has other plans for him. Meanwhile, they all get closer to real danger and the dark secret of the red house.

Siblings Pete and Ellen Morgan lead a relatively secluded life as self-sufficient farmers with their quiet adopted teenage daughter, high school senior Meg Morgan, on their property in rural Piney Ridge, that seclusion in part as the farm is on the other side of Oxhead Woods away from all the other farms and from town. Ellen and Meg are able to convince Pete, who has a peg leg and thus cant do as much as he used to, to hire Megs most trusted classmate, Nath Storm, the son of the long widowed storekeeper, to help out at the farm after school, Petes reluctance in doing so in having a stranger around on a consistent basis. Conversely, Nath accepts the job despite the rampant gossip that abounds in the valley about the mysterious Morgans, especially in they not being a "traditional" family: the unknown nature of how Pete and Ellen came to adopt Meg, and why spinster Ellen has devoted her life to Pete when she and Dr. Jonathan Byrne were once sweet on each other. The job may not sit well with Naths steady girlfriend, possessive Tibby Rinton, in spending any time away from her. Pete cautions Nath not to take the more direct route through the unfamiliar and implied dangerous woods to get home, those dangers including the "screams" he would inevitably hear and the red house hidden somewhere deep inside. What Pete fails to mention is his arrangement regarding the woods with an uneducated young man named Teller who has his own designs on Tibby. Regardless, the lure of the woods are too strong for both Nath and Meg, whose interest is spurred by Naths and by her interest in Nath himself, the two who believe that discovering the secrets of the woods will only happen when they find the red house, that quest at their, Pete and Ellens peril, Petes having to do more with his sanity.
