Story: Somewhere along the mid-19th century American East Coast frontier, two neighboring couples battle hardship and isolation, witnessed by a splendid yet testing landscape, challenging them both physically and psychologically.

In upstate New York in the 1850s, Abigail begins a new year on the rural farm where she lives with her husband Dyer. As Abigail considers the year to come through her journal entries, we experience the marked contrast between her deliberate, stoic manner and her unraveling complex emotions. Spring arrives and Abigail meets Tallie, an emotionally frank and arrestingly beautiful newcomer renting a neighboring farm with her husband, Finney. The two strike up a tentative relationship, filling a void in their lives which neither knew existed.

Still reeling from the untimely demise of her little daughter, more and more, forlorn Abigail finds herself increasingly estranged from her farmer husband, Dyer. As sad-eyed Abigails silent, heart-wrenching grief turns into all-consuming depression, suddenly, luminous Tallie, and her insecure husband, Finney, lease a nearby plot of land in bleak 1856 Schoharie County, and the unhappily married women surrender to the urgency of camaraderie. Now, amid unprecedented, revelatory feelings, and a harsh world carved out by men, both Abigail and Tallie take solace in their blooming, out-of-view friendship. What is it like to be seen, be heard, to love, and be loved?
