On April 8, 2000, aspiring artist Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) became a victim of a violent assault when five men beat him up and left him for dead. Following the attack, Mark was left with little to no memory of his previous life due to brain damage inflicted by his attackers. In a desperate attempt to regain his memories, Hogancamp constructs a miniature World War II village called Marwen in his yard to help in his recovery. Unfortunately, Marks demons come back to haunt him when hes asked to testify against the five men that attacked him..

Mark Hogancamp, an illustrator, gets brutally attacked when walking home from the bar one night. Three years later he is still trying to pick up the missing pieces of a life now lost to amnesia. Luckily he has everything he needs in his backyard; the miniature doll city called "Marwen". Which needs a hero to fight off the evil Nazis. "Welcome to Marwen" is based on the true story of the attack of Mark Hogancamp in 2000. And how he made a mini sized doll-city to cope with the aftermath.
