Episode Info: Its a bad time for the vets and a local farmer when they discover a case of foot and mouth disease. The farmers stock must be destroyed and a general quarantine is in place for thirty days. Siegfried, who came into contact with the animals confines himself to Skeldale house, meaning James and Tristan must do all of the outside calls. James discovers the power of anesthesia in assisting animals to heal: first with a farmers dying ewe and then with the Flaxtons pet poodle.

James Herriot is a vet in Yorkshire, England, during the late 1930s and 1940s. He gets a job at the practice of Siegfried Farnon, who (together with his mischievous brother Tristan) already have a successful business. James undergoes a variety of adventures during his work, which are just as often caused by the characters of the county (including the Farnon brothers) as the animals in his care.
