Episode Info: Calum nurses a young fox back to health but releasing it back to the wild proves to be more challenging than expected. Deirdre unexpectedly shows up in Darrowby on business, but is with someone called Anthony. Siegfried purchases a television in time to see the inaugural TV broadcast in the Dales; he even helps out one of the locals who won a television in a raffle. James and Helen treat an elderly gentlemans cat and only later realize that the owner is also in great need of care.

Story: The trials and misadventures of the staff of a country veterinary office in Yorkshire from the 1930s to the 1950s.

James Herriot is a vet in Yorkshire, England, during the late 1930s and 1940s. He gets a job at the practice of Siegfried Farnon, who (together with his mischievous brother Tristan) already have a successful business. James undergoes a variety of adventures during his work, which are just as often caused by the characters of the county (including the Farnon brothers) as the animals in his care.
