Episode Info: Howard Franklin arrives in Aidensfield with a special request. His wife has just died and her last wish was to be laid to rest in the family grave although they have had no contact with her family since World War I. But her mother Hannah Stockdale blames Franklin for keeping her daughter away from her and for the loss of her two eldest sons in the war, and she will not even give him the time of day. On arrival he discovers that his suitcase with her urn has been switched by mistake. The annual county fête draws nearer and sergeant Blaketon has everybody on their toes....

Story: The 1960s lives and adventures of the police constabulary, medical staff, and residents of Ashfordly and Aidensfield.

Constable Nick Rowan is a English Policeman in the 1960s who decides to be reassigned to the same small village where his wife was born. There, he patrols the countryside as a part of a small attachment in the area dealing with the various events and problems that come up while at same time keeping a eye on Claude Greengrass, the local rogue.

Television adaptation of the novel series "Constable" by Nicholas Rhea. Set in the 1960s within the North Riding of Yorkshire. the series initially followed the cases of village constables (police officers stationed in villages). It eventually expanded to also cover the cases of local doctors and nurses, and the lives of certain villagers.
