Episode Info: There has been a break-in at the county council office. At first it seems that nothing but petty cash was taken, but then it is discovered that an adoption file is missing. When the child of that file is abducted suspicion falls on its biological mother Sandie Eliot. Only the abducted child is not hers! Greengrass reports a murder. One of his homing pigeons has been killed by a peregrine falcon, and when the police will have nothing to do with it he and his fellow members of the local pigeon fanciers association decide to take matters in their own hands.

Constable Nick Rowan is a English Policeman in the 1960s who decides to be reassigned to the same small village where his wife was born. There, he patrols the countryside as a part of a small attachment in the area dealing with the various events and problems that come up while at same time keeping a eye on Claude Greengrass, the local rogue.

Set in the 1960s within the North Riding of Yorkshire. the series initially followed the cases of village constables (police officers stationed in villages). It eventually expanded to also cover the cases of local doctors and nurses, and the lives of certain villagers.
